This image shows the reverse side of the U.S. Lincoln cent as issued from 1959 to 2008, depicting the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., with 36 columns representing the states at the time of Lincoln’s death. Above the memorial, the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” is inscribed, while “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arcs along the top rim and “ONE CENT” along the bottom. The design was created by Frank Gasparro and replaced the wheat ears motif that had been used since 1909.
