About this clipart
This 2013 political cartoon by NAS portrays a weary Scottish man in traditional attire-kilt, sporran, and tam-straining under massive barrels labeled “OIL”, “FISH”, and “200 BN”, symbolizing Scotland’s resource wealth and fiscal liabilities. Behind him, a stern British figure in top hat and Union Jack waistcoat pushes the load, evoking colonial-era imagery of the “White Man’s Burden” to critique asymmetric UK-Scotland financial relations. The piece was published ahead of the 2014 independence referendum, reflecting debates over fiscal autonomy and resource control.
Used in political commentary, educational resources, or news archives discussing Scottish devolution, fiscal fairness, or independence debates; targets readers seeking historical context on UK-Scotland economic tensions.
